Colonia
¿Cómo llegar a Colonia desde Buenos Aires?
Auto: Colonia se encuentra a 470 kms. de Buenos Aires. El viaje en auto es ideal para visitar otras localidades de la costa uruguaya. Se debe llegar primero hasta la ciudad de Gualeguaychú y allí cruzar el Puente Gral. San Martín sobre el río Uruguay e ingresar al país vecino a la localidad de Fray Bentos. Luego por las rutas uruguayas 2 y 21 pasar por las localidades de Mercedes, Nueva Palmira, Carmelo para finalizar en Colonia. Son aproximadamente cinco horas y media de viaje.
Barco: Hay dos empresas que operan en Buenos Aires: Colonia express y Buquebus. Desde Buenos Aires en transporte express, tardas 50 minutos en llegar.
En mi caso fui en Buquebus y el boleto de ida y vuelta + visita guiada, me costó algo de $3300 pesos argentinos. En lo personal, Colonia Express no me gusta porque la terminal queda bastante trasmano y en una zona insegura si vas solx.
Importante: el pasaje marcaba estar dos antes en la terminal, pero recién me hicieron el check in a las 7:10…. así que no te apresures en venir dos horas antes.
¿A qué hora vuelvo?
Si elegís ir y volver en el día, para ir tenés dos opciones: salir a las 8 a.m. o al mediodía y pasar solo medio día en Colonia. Yo opté por la primera para aprovechar el día.
Para volver: podes hacerlo a las 17 hs o a las 20 hs. Yo elegí el segundo turno pero la verdad es que el tiempo te sobra para llegar, hacer el tour, comer, y dar una vuelta más e irte en el de las 17 hs.
Si vas en verano, irte más tarde te da la chance de ver los atardeceres de Colonia. Si vas en invierno, no te lo recomiendo, a menos que vayas con ropa para el polo norte jaja (Tené en cuenta que Colonia queda justo al lado del rio e incluso en verano, hay mucho viento cuando empieza a caer el sol).
Tour guiado
NO te recomiendo hacer el de Buquebus. Cómo te contaba, yo viajé con esa empresa y compre el paquete que incluía el tour por la ciudad colonial, que fue en pocas palabras pésimo… Muchísima gente, la guía no tenia un parlante para la cantidad de personas que éramos, y en vez de 50 min, duró 30min y nos habló solo de dos cosas.
No vi gente haciendo free walking tours (por lo general están con una sombrilla y les das una propina una vez que finaliza) pero será cuestión de averiguar o ponerse en contacto de ante mano con algún guía local que te pueda contar más sobre la historia del lugar.
Lugares para visitar
Puerta de la Ciudadela: también conocida como Puerta de Campo es uno de los monumentos históricos más importantes del barrio histórico de Colonia del Sacramento.
La construyeron en el año 1745 por orden del gobernador portugués Vasconcellos que en ese entonces lideraba esas tierras. En sus orígenes la Puerta era el pórtico de entrada a Colonia.
Calle de los suspiros: Desde su creación llevó el nombre de “Ansina” y lo cierto es que no se tienen registros de cuándo se le cambió el nombre al actual, aunque existen varias leyendas que lo explican.
Hay quienes sostienen que la Calle de los Suspiros fue llamada así por los numerosos prostíbulos que había en la época colonial. Estos lugares tenían mucho éxito ya que eran visitados por los marineros que pisaban tierra firme y solían ir en busca de algo de diversión.
Las mujeres eran piropeadas constantemente y hacían que los marineros suspiraban por ellas y de ahí el nombre actual. Esta calle es la única que se conservó al 100% de la época de la conquista de Portugal.
La leyenda dice que… si vas en pareja, para revivir el fuego de la pasión (palabras de mi guía, no mías jaja) tenés que subir y bajar con tu pareja 3 veces la calle. Y si estás solterx y querés conseguir pareja, tenés que subir y bajarla 6 VECES!!!! No sé vos, pero yo moriré soltera, porque no hay chance que haga tremenda peregrinación por un chongo.
El Faro: Su construcción se debió a que fueron tantos los naufragios en la zona (muchos barcos fueron a parar al fondo del río con grandes tesoros de oro y plata a bordo) que la necesidad de alumbrar la ciudad durante la noche comenzó a hacerse sentir entre sus pobladores.
Comenzó a construirse en el año 1855 y está situado sobre parte de las ruinas de una de las torres del antiguo convento San Francisco Xavier. La entrada cuesta 1 u$d o $30 uruguyos. Para llegar a la punta del faro hay que subir 100 escalones por una escalera de caracol.
Los horarios en los que permanece abierto son de 9 a 18 hs. Te recomiendo que la subida la hagas bien temprano o bien de tarde, no hice el recorrido porque en ambos turnos había 30 min de espera, pero me dijeron que al mediodía morís de calor para subir.
Museos: Hay muchos mini museos como el de los azulejos que podes visitar pagando un pase que te incluye todos por 50 uruguayos. Yo personalmente no los visite, porque fui un sábado y estaban muy llenos de gente.
Costanera: bordeando la ciudad, en donde antes había una playa, ahora hay una costanera muy linda que bordea la parte colonial de la ciudad.
En esta costanera vas a conseguir las mejores vistas del atardecer.
Perderte caminando en las calles: Sin dudas los mejores lugares de Colonia, son los pequeños rincones escondidos que encontrás caminando.
Te recomiendo full ir en epoca de primavera, no sólo por las cuestiones climaticas que te comentaba, sino también porque vas a ver todas las flores de las casitas en su máximo esplendor.

Tenés que saber que los dos platos típicos de Uruguay son:
Chivito: que en realidad no es carne de chivo, es lomo de vaca que se suele comer al plato con papas o en sándwich.
Chajá: El chajá, es un postre típico de la cocina uruguaya creado por Orlando Castellano, dueño de la confitería “Las Familias” de Paysandú.
Este postre tiene bizcochuelo, merengue seco, durazno en almíbar, dulce de leche y crema chantillí, aunque también existen otras variantes que sustituyen el durazno por frutillas y la crema por mousse de chocolate. Este postre le debe su nombre a un ave que habita en Latinoamérica y que es abundante en Paysandú.
OJO: la guía nos vendió este postre como algo típico, pero en Colonia no se consigue (sí, miss piggy preguntó en todos los restaurantes/cafeterías) me comentaron que, si bien es un postre típico de Uruguay, se consume más en zonas como Montevideo.
Para almorzar encontré el restaurante Carlos Gardel que queda en la misma cuadra que la Iglesia.
Tiene las dos opciones: menú parrilla libre a $650 uruguayos o menú vegetariano a $450 uruguayos. En ambos casos, tenés barra libre de ensaladas, papas fritas, distintos tipos de escabeche como berenjena y te incluye bebida, panera y un postre (helado, ensalada de fruta o flan con dulce de leche) todo muy abundante.
Mega tip: En Uruguay podés solicitar la devolución de IVA en algunas de tus compras, como parte de los beneficios para turistas. El beneficio de TAX FREE en Uruguay solo aplica para turistas que no residan en Uruguay. La devolución de IVA se realiza solo comprando los productos que forman parte del beneficio, en las tiendas que están adheridas. En Colonia, la gran mayoría de los restaurantes del centro histórico se encuentran adheridos.
En mi caso, no soy vegetariana pero no como carnes rojas porque no me gusta. Tengo que decir que fue bastante difícil encontrar un lugar donde comer algo ‘vegetariano’ que no sea una simple ensalada, o una opción alternativa a la carne de vaca como el pescado.
La comida realmente estaba riquísima y el flan con dulce de leche del final no defraudó.
